About Aga Khan Cultural Services – Afghanistan (AKCS-A):

The Aga Khan Cultural Services – Afghanistan (AKCS-A) was founded in 1988 and is registered in Geneva, Switzerland, as a private, non-denominational, philanthropic foundation. It is an integral part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a family of institutions created by His Highness the Aga Khan, with distinct yet complementary mandates to improve the welfare and prospects of people in countries in the developing world, particularly in Asia and Africa. Part of the wider development programme of the Aga Khan Development Network in Afghanistan, the AKCS-A has since 2002 been engaged in a range of initiatives in Kabul, Heart, Balkh and Badakhshan aimed at the conservation and revitalization of historic neighborhoods, the improvement of living conditions and the development of professional and crafts skills.

Job Description:

General Function:

AKCS-A is supporting a number of projects in Afghanistan aimed at protecting specific neighborhoods or buildings at risk, and improving living conditions of the inhabitants, as part of a broader process of urban revitalization.  Working within a team of Afghan and international professionals, under the direct supervision of the Chief Construction Manager or his delegate, the Plumbing Superintendent will be involved in a range of technical tasks in support of AKCS-A’s conservation and rehabilitation activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Knowledgeable in Plumbing/Mechanical Engineering and industry standards with extensive experience in hands-on construction and implementation of Plumbing/Mechanical works.
  • Core competency in installation, maintenance, and repair pipes, calves, fittings, drainage systems, and fixtures in conservation and new projects.
  • Able to troubleshoot and maintain a wide range of piping system including:

             – Water systems

             – Sanitary Sewer

             – Compressed Air

             – Gas supply

  • Accountable for quality installation of the project’s Plumbing/Mechanical systems.
  • Reviewing submittals for accuracy and compliancy.
  • Identifying potential change orders.
  • Responsible for subordinate supervisors and lead persons as well as being jointly responsible with the Construction Manager for having material, tools, equipment, information and appropriate manpower in the proper place in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to read and Interpret Plumbing/Mechanical drawings for craft installation.
  • Perform material take-offs, ordering tools, materials, and equipment in a timely fashion to maximize field productivity, in coordination with Construction Manager.
  • Coordination of installation between trades and coordinate sub-contractor progress.
  • Ensure all on-site employees under his management comply with H&S standards & AKCS-A work rules.
  • Monitor labor reporting, job cost reviews and prepare time sheets and two week look a heads.
  • Bring the job in on time and under budget.
  • Respond to plumbing emergencies and find quick solutions on the spot.
  • Undertake other relevant tasks as assigned by AKCS’s Project Manager and/or Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Job Requirements:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Equivalent vocational/technical training certificate and/or military, industrial or commercial experience may also be considered.
  • 10/plus years of hands-on plumbing experience required, of which 5 years verifiable experience as a Plumbing Superintendent.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Organizational and planning skills.
  • Must be detailed oriented.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
