Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), is one of the largest private, not-for-profit, non-denominational educational networks in the developing world to improve the quality of life of the communities. Through the provision of ECD, formal (K-12) and non-formal education programs, AKES seeks to enable all children and students to acquire both knowledge and the essential wisdom needed to balance that knowledge and enable them to attain the highest fulfilment.
AKES Afghanistan (AKES,A) started its operation in Afghanistan in 2004. Ever since, AKES,A has been providing quality ECD and non-formal education programs that benefitted thousands of children and students living in marginalized areas. Currently, AKES,A is operating in 6 provinces namely Kabul, Baghlan, Kunduz, Balkh, Samangan and Badakhshan reaching to over 25,000 children and students through one Central Office in Kabul, three Regional Offices and several Area Offices.
AKES,A is determined to establish the Aga Khan Early Learning Resource Center (AKELRC) in Kabul in 2021. The AKELRC will be a flagship ECD program serving as the national AKDN ECD Resource Center for early years and family programs in the country. The AKELRC, upon becoming a center of excellence for government, development partners and the private sector, will continuously create traditional and alternative professional development tools, resources and opportunities for ECD teachers and practitioners at the national level. Finally, the AKELRC will move up the AKES,A ECD program expansion and program reform agenda through providing technical and programmatic support to a wide network of ECD centers (through Hub and Spokes Model) in eight provinces of Afghanistan.
The AKELRC will offer ECD education to children 3-6 years. We are looking for ECD teachers who are committed to learning and delivering high quality education to children aged 3-6 years and their families. We have high expectations for teachers and for children. Our aim is to provide the highest quality care and education. The ECD teacher will maintain internationally recognized standards of best practice, integrate National standards and apply the High/Scope Curriculum approach to early childhood learning. Key responsibilities will be developing the curriculum, supporting children’s development through play-based learning, and supporting parents in their role as their child’s first teacher. We are looking for teachers who place high emphasis on care and respect for children, have a passion for learning and teachers who have a deep interest in providing children the best start to their journey of education.
- Ensure safety of children at all times.
- Lead and support all children during inside and outside activities enabling every child to fully access the curriculum.
- Plan, develop and implement learning and daily routines for all children based on the National Curriculum and the High/Scope Approach.
- Actively interact with children and develop strong relationships.
- Demonstrate care and respect for children as individuals- their nature, personality, unique skills and abilities.
- Act as a ‘language model’ to stimulate and support language development.
- Work cooperatively as a team to meet the social, emotional and physical needs of all children in the program.
- Prepare a safe, calm, nurturing environment to support the developmental and social/emotional needs of all children.
- Formally track developmental progress creating a profile and portfolio for each child.
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times by demonstrating trustworthiness, good judgment and discretion in family matters.
- Ensure all complaints, concerns and other confidential matters are regularly shared with the AKELRC Coordinator.
- Participate in meetings with parents/guardians to share information and discuss support strategies for the child.
- Apply first aid and injury prevention skills as needed and provide documentation of actions.
- Document suspected child abuse and immediately share this information with supervisor.
- Remain up to date with current Early Childhood practices.
- Support the program in the effective promotion and representation to the local community and other relevant forums, such as conferences, network meetings, and schools.
- Possess knowledge of Ministry of Education, Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Social Affairs Laws pertaining to the field of Early Childhood Development.
- Follow the applicable Health & Safety practices to maintain a safe and clean work environment, and be proactive in matters of health and safety.
- Undertake professional development and avail online training and electronic educational resources as identified by supervisor and by your own initiative.
- Undertake other duties as assigned by the AKELRC Coordinator.
- To carry out the roles and responsibilities in a way which reflects AKES, A’s commitment to safeguarding and protection of children, vulnerable adults, beneficiaries, partners, visitors, community members and employees in accordance with the organization relevant policies
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Years/Primary Education
- Minimum three years teaching experience in a Primary/Pre-Primary Program.
- Competent in all aspects of early childhood teaching and learning.
- Acquainted with technology, including Microsoft Office, internet research and online education resources.
- Competent in dealing with conflict resolution/positive behavior management.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse staff.
- Excellent time management, organizational, interpersonal skills and communication skills.
- Be willing to obtain CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Receptive, creative, and open minded with the ability to adapt quickly.
- Be familiar or able to immediately familiarize with Child Protection Policies, the law on Domestic Violence and other related laws.
