The Regional Agricultural Development Program – East (RADP-E) is a 5-year USAID funded program designed to address the demand for agricultural goods and services by partnering with the private sector to develop inclusive, growth-oriented apricot, dairy, poultry and tomato value chains in the central and Eastern Provinces of Ghazni, Kapisa, Laghman, Logar, Nangahar, Parwan, Wardak, and Kabul. To boost agricultural-led economic growth in targeted provinces and value chains, RADP-East provides technical services to increase the competitiveness of selected value chains, expand the number of enterprises that can compete and upgrade products and services in selected markets and improve relationships and linkages between those firms and other market participants throughout the value chain.

Job Description:

RADP-East will hire the services of a national expert on standard apricot / tomato sun-drying methods and associated practices. The expert should have a strong knowledge of RADP-East targeted provinces production patterns (Kabul, Wardak, Ghazni, Logar, Nangarhar, Kapisa, and Parwan). In close collaboration with partner anchor firms, the STTA will develop a comprehensive apricot/tomato drying manual that will include best practices of apricot and tomato drying and related information / practices (variety selection, proper harvesting, sorting/grading, drying, storing, and packing), enabling the anchor firms as well as small processors to produce high value and marketable dried tomato and apricot. Once finalized and approved by RADP-East, the national STTA will deliver training to 10 partner anchor firms that will further train their contract farmers.

 

The technical consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Value Chain Lead and the Value Chain Manager.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Provide inception plan (1 day)

Engage with 10 processing anchor firms to collect information for the development of a comprehensive apricot/tomato drying manual (6 days);

Evaluation of anchor firm’s activities with standard processing methods (2 days);

Development of comprehensive apricot/tomato drying manual that addresses the gaps in the processing methods of apricot and tomato processors (13 days);

Train 10 RADP-East supported anchor firms on standard tomato and apricot drying and associated practices (2 days);

Provide a completion report (1day); and,

Other activities deemed necessary for better and effective implementation of this activity.

 

Deliverables

Deliverable for this assignment will include: a concise report (5-8 pages), detailing activities and accomplishments during this consultancy period, including:

Inception plan: This report will cover in details the technical consultant’s action plan for the duration of his/her mission. The technical consultant is expected to submit his/her action plan during the first day of his mission. This plan will be reviewed by VC Lead and VC Manager before approval.

A comprehensive apricot and tomato drying manual that includes best practices of apricot and tomato drying and related information / practices (variety selection, proper harvesting, sorting/grading, drying, storing, and packing).

Training session to 10 RADP-East supported anchor firms on standard tomato and apricot drying and associated practices.

The Consultant will also conduct an end of assignment de-briefing with RADP-East management about his mission achievement.

Job Requirements:

The technical consultant will have the following qualifications:

Bachelor degree in food technology, food nutrition, horticulture, agribusiness or other related fields with at least three years of experience in apricot and tomato processing activities.

Demonstrated knowledge of food safety and personal good hygienic practices.

Willingness to travel Kabul, Nangarhar, Laghman, Logar, Kapisa, Ghazni, Parwan and Wardak provinces.

Strong technical presentation and writing skills in English language.

 

Conditions of Work Requirements

Work and living facilities are in high security zones with frequent security drills and protocols and limited access to medical facilities. General work environment and living quarters requires ability to walk numerous flights of stairs on a daily basis. Security protocols require the individual in this position to be able to quickly climb multiple flights of stairs while wearing 30 lbs. of personal protective equipment, walk swiftly or run across uneven terrain without assistance, and enter and exit project vehicles without assistance.
